Virtual Characters Will 'Make Faces' Now

Researchers have been able to simulate human facial expressions in virtual characters making them even more interesting. 

As of now, these virtual agents mimic the human behavior through programmed commands or scripts but this leads to very "robotic" reaction, uninteresting to users, said Marco Antonio Ramos Corchado, engineer at the Department of Computational Science at UAEM, in the press release. 

The research aims to enhance expressions and emotions based on real people while taking as reference the 43 muscles that are involved in facial behavior depending on the psychological environment, the press release added.

To get closer to the realistic expressions, researchers placed tactile sensors that release tiny electrical pulses to provoke different gestures which a 3D camera captures the personality traits. 

With the data collected, multiple virtual characters were included in project called "serious game" which, unlike video games consoles or computers, does not seek to entertain, but to run different educational, scientific or civil strategies, detailed the UAEM engineer, in the press release. 

The project aims to foster attitudes of self-improvement while using dynamics of context to enhance the learning process and promote collaborative environments and communications to solve problems and riddles.
