5 Ways to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Update Date: Mar 25, 2019 07:59 PM EDT

Vacations are excuses to let loose and forget about the stresses of work-life. You don't want to get there and feel under the weather - you want to be in good shape for your entire trip. Here's how you can stay healthy from the beginning until the very end:

Stay Hydrated

Get plenty of water, especially if you're going to be drinking alcohol. For every frozen margarita, you should have 2 glasses of water. Otherwise, your next morning could be a painful one.

If you're flying to your vacation destination, you should know that the plane's air circulation will dehydrate you. That's why you feel so rough after getting off of your flight. Other than drinking water, you should follow these tips on staying hydrated:

  • Avoid alcohol

  • Avoid salty foods

  • Eat fruits and vegetables

Get Compression Stockings

Whenever you have a long flight, you notice that your feet and ankles swell. The problem is uncomfortable, and it makes standing or walking difficult right after landing.

You should wear compression hosiery during your flight to improve your circulation and prevent swollen legs, ankles or feet. Staying hydrated and getting up from your seat to move around every hour will also help. This advice is especially important for anyone who is at high risk of developing blood clots.

Wear Pool Shoes

No matter how often the staff mops the floor by their pool, you should not walk on it with your bare feet. You could get a bad case of athlete's foot, which is a fungus that makes your feet cracked, red and itchy.

The best way to avoid athletes foot while on the road is to get a pair of pool shoes and wear them in pool areas, public showers, and locker rooms. It's also an effective way to avoid plantar warts and other foot infections.

Catch Your Z's

Travel can be rough on your body, so you need to let yourself recover. If you're going to be staying up late at night, sleep-in in the morning. If you prefer to wake up right as the sun rises, give yourself an earlier bedtime.

Ignoring sleep will make you tired, sick and irritable. To guarantee that you'll be a pleasant travel companion, get your seven to nine hours a night.

Don't Get Too Much Sun

If you're going to a tropical getaway, you'll be spending most of your time soaking up the sun. Without taking precautions, you could end up with a terrible sunburn. Slather on the sunscreen and stay in the shade.

Another reason why you should limit your time directly in the sun is that you could suffer heat stroke and end up in the hospital. Try to stay hydrated and wear light clothing. If you feel faint or sick after spending time in the sun, seek medical attention.

You've been planning a vacation for ages. You'd hate to finally get to your beautiful getaway, only to feel terrible half the time that you're there. Avoid that pounding headache or itchy foot infection and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
