US senator Charles Schumer urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to investigate STEEM peanut butter for allegedly containing caffeine that may imperil human, particularly, children's health.
This may look like an ordinary jar of peanut butter, and it may cost the same as a jar of peanut butter, but the fact is, it's much more dangerous than an ordinary jar of peanut butter. There is a new caffeinated product that has goes to where no previous such product has gone before," Schumer said pointing out that a regular jar of the peanut butter contains 170 milligrams of caffeine, such amount is said to be higher than the caffeine content in Red Bull, New York Post reported.
Further, Pix11 said that a regular eight-ounce jar of this peanut butter manufactured by Greenfield, MA company is said to have higher caffeine content than an 8-ounce cup of coffee, a 16-ounce latte, a 8.4-ounce Red Bull, or a 1.5 ounce of espresso.
With 94% families in the US having peanut butter in their kitchen, the New York senator urged the FDA to examine the product lest children will consume it like a regular peanut butter and suffer the health effects afterwards.
"The thought of super caffeinated peanut butter should give everyone the jitters because of the potential health threat it poses, especially in the hands of children and teenagers. Parents across the country shouldn't have to worry about a scenario in which their child might unknowingly bite into a peanut butter and jelly sandwich that contains more caffeine than two cups of coffee," he said in a press release.
Meanwhile, makers of the STEEM peanut butter would be willing to cooperate with the government in case of investigations in the future.
"We welcome the FDA, Sen. Schumer or any other federally regulated authority to review STEEM's product and processes so they can see that STEEM is perfectly safe when used as directed," says the company's press release in response to Schumer's allegation.
As written in their website, STEEM peanut butter's caffeine is intended to give more energy to the person using it as well as nutrients that the body needs, Mass Live said.
"STEEM is designed to provide a consistent release of sustained energy and the naturally slow digestion of peanut butter is the key to that. STEEM delivers protein, electrolytes, and caffeine, granting you hours of endurance and focus, and freeing you from distractions like hunger and fatigue," its website stated.
