Gwen Stefani sang like she did not suffer from a ruptured eardrum when she performed her heart out to "Fix You" with Team Gwen during the results show of "The Voice" last Tuesday, May 2. Get to know more details, here.

Stefani Was Unable To Perform The Previous Week

Gwen Stefani was supposed to sing at the Keep the Memory Alive: Power of Love Gala last Apr. 27 but failed to show up because of her ruptured eardrum during the flight on her way to the event, two days prior. The event was part of the annual fundraiser of the Cleveland Clinic at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

She announced in an apology video at the event that she was advised by doctors not to sing or fly until everything was okay. Gwen Stefani was replaced at the last minute by Jennifer Hudson, Billboard reported.

But during the results show of "The Voice", Gwen Stefani performed like nothing happened. Her boyfriend, Blake Shelton, informed reporters that his girlfriend's ruptured eardrum has since healed to a point where she can hear again and that she was all right.

She was said to have boarded the plane with a cold and suffered the ruptured eardrum when the plane reached a certain altitude. She sought medical attention at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, per People.

How Are Eardrums Ruptured?

People usually feel pain in their ears during flights because of a tense eardrum. But cases of ruptured eardrums like what happened to Gwen Stefani are rare.

Instances when the air pressure in the middle ear and the air in the outside environment are unbalanced can cause ruptured eardrums. The imbalance of air pressure can happen during flights, scuba diving, or a direct blow to the ear.

Usual symptoms include pain in the ear, fluid drainage from the ear, hearing loss, a ringing sound, and vertigo. The condition though painful, can heal on its own usually within eight weeks.

Doctors would only usually give antibiotics to avoid infection or treatment for the pain. There are also instances when doctors would drain the fluid that would collect in the middle ear if there is an infection.
