'Suicide Squad 2' News & Update: 'The Shallows' Director Jaume-Collet Serra Might Helm Sequel, Mel Gibson Also A Contender

Update Date: Mar 18, 2017 11:07 PM EDT

It isn't easy handing over a franchise potential-heavy project to someone else once a first film has already been established. Unfortunately, that's the case for David Ayer, whose "Suicide Squad" saw massive success last year.

Now, he's booked to helm the film's spinoff, "Gotham City Sirens," starring Margot Robbie. That leaves "Suicide Squad 2" with no director at the moment.

That's about to change, however, as "The Shallows" director Jaume-Collet Serra might helm sequel. But he's not the only one contending for the director's seat, as Mel Gibson is also a contender.

Who Will Direct Sequel?

According to Screenrant, last year's DC hit earned $746 with a $175 million budget, which indicates a go signal for a sequel. However, as David Ayer's busy with his own all-female project "Gotham City Sirens," Warner Bros. is looking for someone else to helm "Suicide Squad 2." It seems that "The Shallows" director, Jaume-Collet Serra might helm the sequel, but the studio is also looking at Mel Gibson, whose "Hacksaw Ridge" won an Oscar last year.

Jaume-Collet Serra Diretorial Credits And Other Contenders

Meanwhile, "Suicide Squad 2" possible director Jaume-Collet Serra is more known for his work with Liam Neeson in "Unknown," "Non-stop," and "Run All Night." He also most recently directed the Blake Lively thriller, "The Shallows."

Other directors that Warner Bros. is looking at are Jonathan Levine, who directed "Warm Bodies," and Daniel Espinosa, who directed "Safe House."

Warner Bros. has already tasked "The Legend of Tarzan" co-screenwriter Adam Cozad to write the script, but they're looking to hire a director soon to work with Cozad. As per Cinemablend, fans of the franchise will have to wait and see before the studio announces any release date for the film.

In the meantime, there are two more DC films hitting theaters this year, with "Wonder Woman" on June 2 and "Justice League" on Nov. 17. Keep this page bookmarked for the latest on the DCEU.
