Although hiccoughs are not a disease, yet the effects can be seriously unpleasant. Just thinking about hiccoughs can make someone's mood foul. So, if you are having a hard time, here are some ways to get rid of your hiccoughs.

#1: Plug Your Ears While Drinking Water

Although this hasn't been medically proved yet, yet can be a good way to get rid of your hiccoughs. However, you need to drink a full glass of water with straw while blocking both of your ears. When you have hiccoughs, it is because the phrenic or vagus nerves are irritated. Since both these nerves end in the ears, putting your fingers in your ears can stop the irritation, reported Medical Daily.

#2: Put Your Tongue Out

This might be something you don't want to try in public because it is rude, but this can be equally effective. Sticking out your tongue helps to relax the agitated phrenic nerves and ease the spasms caused due to hiccoughs.

#3: Bite A Lemon

Biting a lemon, once again, would be a tough job if you are out in the open and having hiccoughs. However, when you bite a lemon and take in the juice raw, it elicits a feeling similar to someone scaring you. This produces some adrenaline and takes your mind off the hiccough.

#4: Bite A Pencil

You should have a pencil and hold it horizontally between your teeth. With the pencil in place, try drinking a glass of water. However, be careful to keep the pencil in place and drink as much as possible.

#5: Medicines

In case your hiccoughs haven't stopped after 48 hours, the situation is a bit serious than you might have anticipated. In this case, the safest thing you can do is to visit a doctor. However, you can also grab some over the shelf medicines like Baclophen, Metoclopramide (marketed under Relgan) or Chloropromazine (market name is Thorazine).

Before you consume any medicine, always make sure that you seek expert advice. Other than that make sure that you have tried a couple of natural remedies before proceeding with the drugs.
