Microsoft Surface Pro Specs, Price & Release Date: Device Better Than iPad Pro?

By Megha Kedia | Update Date: May 09, 2016 06:00 AM EDT

Recent rumors suggest Microsoft Surface Pro 5 might not have a 2016 release date. In fact, the release might get delayed to 2017, according to Yibada.

The reason for the delay might be Microsoft's preference to use the upcoming Intel Kaby Lake processing chip for its line of hybrid devices. It is expected that use of Kaby Lake chip will double the efficiency of Microsoft Surface Pro 5. But the problem is that the chip will not be ready before the end of 2016 and this will indirectly postpone the release date of Microsoft Surface Pro 5.

As far as Microsoft Surface Pro 5 specifications are concerned, it is rumored that the Surface Pro 5 will feature a 4K Ultra HD screen display with a resolution of 3840 pixels in width - a major improvement from the 2736 x 1824 resolution of the Surface Pro 4.

It is also expected that the new Surface Pro will have an improved stylus. Microsoft claims that the pen will be a stylus that will provide an active functionality powered by a rechargeable battery.

"A stylus may provide active functionality that is powered by a rechargeable battery. A charging circuit within the stylus may provide charging current for recharging the battery via one or more terminals configured to contact charging contacts of an associated stylus charger," Microsoft noted in its patent application, according to The Bitbag.

It will have the latest USB type-C port and On-Board Fingerprint Scanner as well. The device is expected to come out with a starting price of $899, with an Intel Core i7 model to cost $999, and an i7 Extreme version to cost $1,599, according to CNET.

As Microsoft is yet to confirm Surface Pro 5 specifications, we would advise you to take the unconfirmed reports with a pinch of salt. The Microsoft Surface Pro 5 is targeted to compete with the likes of Apple iPad Pro 2.

Recently, the current Microsoft Surface Pro 4 had a $150 price drop from its original retail price, while the previous Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is available at a $200 discount. Are you excited about Microsoft Surface Pro 5 release?
