WWE Payback 2016 Results & Reactions: Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose Big Winners?

By Brian McNeill | Update Date: May 02, 2016 06:00 AM EDT

WWE heavyweight champion Roman Reigns kept his title against AJ Styles as expected though the match saw a lot of surprise twists from Shane and Stephanie McMahon.

With the siblings being given equal shots of handing the WWE shows, the regular match turned into a no count out match and then a no disqualification match with both stressing that they wanted a definite result.

The match went back and forth with Reigns and Styles having their share of momentum. Both battled inside and outside the ring though things went up a notch when Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson came into the picture.

Both came to aid Styles but the numbers game would soon be levelled with the aid brought in by “The Usos”. As one would guess, chaos ensued from a main event that was seemingly getting out of hand. In the end, it took a spear from the Big Dog against the “Phenomenal One” that was enough for the pin.

Dean Ambrose on the other hand got some measure of payback when he won over Chris Jericho. The two have been feuding back and forth for some time now dating back to the cancellation of the “Highlight Reel” of Y2J.

The match was an action-packed and gruelling card that many were expecting as both fought tooth and nail. But a miscalculated move on the part of Y2J proved costly, allowing Ambrose to use his knees and execute his “Dirty Deeds” finisher.

With both former “Shield” members having successful wins at WWE Payback, it will be interesting what the future holds. There are rumors swirling that the faction which also includes Seth Rollins will at one point reunite and will likely feud with the yet to be seen “Bulletproof Balor Club”.

Ironically, that was a segment many were anticipating. Contrary to rumors, Gallows and Anderson didn’t turn on Styles after all and instead helped their old buddy.

But all that may not be over yet with Styles expected to get a rematch at WWE Raw. And according to the discussion of the McMahons following Reigns’ win. From the looks of it, Reigns and Styles will meet again at WWE Extreme Rules on May 22 but a rematch will take place at WWE Raw as well.

Suggested by Shane-O-Mac, Styles will get an immediate rematch and that it will be under extreme rules, something that will likely be as rowdy (if not worse) than the main event seen at WWE Payback.
