Yeast and certain types of bacteria are commonly seen in women's vagina but when they grow and multiply in large numbers that result in infection. Yeast infection is easily treatable provided women are aware of the signs and symptoms experienced at the onset of the infection.

Most of the yeast infection seen in human is caused by one of the main species, Candida albicans. As a matter of fact, the United States' first uterine transplantation procedure performed recently, failed after couple of days, because of the yeast infection in the woman's vagina.

Lindsey McFarland, 26, had uterine transplantation surgery at Cleveland Clinic in March and the transplant failed soon after, necessitating the removal of uterus as yeast infection compromised the blood supply to the part, according to Tech Times.

Generally bacteria like Lactobacillus acidophilus present in the vagina keep the organisms like yeast under check. When the vaginal environment changes because of intake of antibiotics, the imbalance aids the growth and multiplication of yeast species that are not affected by antibiotics.

Health conditions like diabetes and HIV infection as well as high estrogen levels in the body during hormone therapy and pregnancy may also pave way for yeast infection, noted Web MD.

Signs and symptoms of yeast infection include soreness in the vagina and burning sensation or pain during urination. Thick and clumpy white discharge resembling cottage cheese in appearance is seen in some women. The discharge is usually odorless.

Yeast infection is common during pregnancy and in ordinary cases the signs and symptoms are usually seen a week prior to mensuration. Reddening of labia is seen in case of infection and pain during intercourse may also be experienced. Make sure to visit the doctor immediately in case of prevalence of such symptoms.

Good genital hygiene is a must to prevent yeast infection. In addition to hygiene, women should also take in healthy diet and maintain their immune system in good shape. It is also necessary to eat foods rich in probiotics like yogurt to maintain the balance of beneficial bacteria in the body.

Avoiding antibiotics, unless there is a compelling need to contain infectious bacteria, would help in keeping vaginal environment balanced. No powders or creams should be used in the genitals and avoiding wearing pantyhose and tight jeans is advisable to prevent yeast infection.

Over the counter medication for the treatment of yeast in vagina is not advisable since the signs and symptoms cannot rule out the possibility of other bacterial infections.
